Just finished training with my 82 year old independent living client and
feel inspired to write a blog. This is only our forth session and can
already see so many improvements in so many area’s.

Posture – By session 3 you could see improvements in her posture. Her
form doing exercises has greatly improved and she has even began to
correct poor posture without needing a cue.

Balance. When she first started exercising all of her one leg exercises
where done while holding on to something. Now she can do full calf raises
and step ups without needing to hold on to anything

Flexibility – She has improved in her hip flexibility greatly. While doing
dead lifts she said that she felt she could reach further down within five
repetitions. Her range of motion in her shoulders are also improving.

Confidence- She is also more confident with the movement that she is
doing. Not using anything to stabilize herself while doing the step up
exercise was her idea. She wants to push her self and she wants to
improve.

Memorization – Since we have been working with her for 4 weeks she is
memorizing the exercises, what she has to do for them, and what apart of
the body they work. This recall is also a benefit because she is making
associations with the exercise. She is also very aware of how exercises
translate to tasks throughout day to day life.

All of these area’s are extremely important for doing day to day tasks and
continuing to live independently. During the session she also said that
she tries harder and feels more comfortable when I am with her as opposed
to being alone. She says it’s nice to have someone cheering her on, to
explain the exercises and to correct mistakes. Her enthusiasm and
dedication is greatly rewarding. I can’t wait to see what the future
training sessions hold, but this was defiantly a good day for my books.

To Hire a Trainer or Not to Hire a Trainer? That is the question.

Who really needs a Personal Trainer and why? Some people may be looking to educate themselves in fitness and health and seek the consultation of an expert. Others may begin a new exercise program and after the first week have a celebratory drink only to find you stay on the party bus for 6 months and have to start up again, “for real, this time”. Hiring a Personal Trainer falls into the category of booking appointments, which hold you accountable. Many people are more likely to stick to commitments when they involve someone else, especially if it is a valued relationship.

It’s easy to get into a comfort zone and lack that extra push to move forward. A Personal Trainer is that source of motivation needed to advance you to the next level and work to your true fullest potential.

Older Adult EXERCISE FACTS

Being active at any age is important. Yet stats Canada reports that 50% of
Canadians physically inactive. As we age the benefits of exercise can
increase the quality of life an individual has.

Seniors that are regularly active have less chances of falling. Falling is
the cause of 50% of head injuries and 90% of hip injuries. So it is easy
to see why it is necessary try to prevent falls from happening. Yet one
hundred thousand people over the age of 65 are hospitalized every year for
falling.

Training can decrease chances of falling because it improves strength and
balance. Another focus of our training programs is endurance. Endurance is
important in day to day task such as carrying groceries or walking for
long periods of time. Another area where Train by Trina has individualized
older adult training is by introducing a cognitive component to the
training. This component was introduced because exercising the mind can
have as many benefits as improving fitness. Studies have show that having
a high cognitive reserve can reduce the risk of developing dementia by
46%. By adding a cognitive component to the training routine it is also a
good use of time, as we recognize that most older adults are not able to
train for one hour we are still able to improve other area’s of health
without needing multiple sessions.

Train by Trina is happy to announce that two new trainers, Andera and
Alexandrea are joining the team. With corporate wellness expanding and
more clients interested in personal training we needed an addition to our
team to keep up with the increasing fitness demand!

Both are coming to us from many years of training experience teaching
fitness classes in Toronto and we look forward to them joining our Train
by Trina team to help with our corporate wellness fitness series that we
will have now and in the future.

Over the years Train by Trian initiated innovative fitness programs that
are targeted at both corporate clients and individuals. While creating
programs specifically for individuals or certain job positions improve
physical and mental health of our clients. Training helps improve self
confidence, concentration and helps physically transform a client.

Andrea Roa

Can Fit pro candidate, Andrea brings to Train by Trina a vast amount of
fitness class experience. Andrea is trained and experienced in Kickboxing,
Muay This, Boot Camp, Spinning and body sculpting classes.

With her experience as a fitness instructor it has allowed her to evaluate
and meet individuals needs, help participants maintain goals and keep
individuals motivated along the way.

Alexandra Nino

With her extensive knowledge in Latin rhythms and basic dance steps
Alexandrea is a bonafide Zumba instructor. She is a certified Zumba
instructor with certificates in Zumba Gold and Zumbatomic. She has been
instructing Zumba since 2010

Alexandrea also has her BA in Business Admin which she received for the
University of Javeriana in Colombia.

This addition is excellent for Train by Trian. It means that their are
more corporate wellness programs being implemented. This means that more
corporations and people are realizing the importance of fitness for a
healthy and happy life.

Fitness for Valentines? Yeah or Nay?

I would like to take a poll: Is the gift of fitness a good way to tell your Valentine you love him/her? Even with my proclivity to fitness as a Personal Trainer, I have to admit if my partner were to give me Personal Training Sessions for Valentines Day I would be tempted to give him a half-eaten box of chocolates in return (with a note that says, “I just want to help you feel healthier”). Then again, a strong and healthy body is the cornerstone for life, so maybe I would just feel touched that my partner wants to keep me around for a long time. What do you think? Is Personal Training the lousiest or loveliest gift a partner could give you for Valentines?

Wellness STATS for Canada

According to Stats Canada, workplace stress results in a decrease in productivity and increased absenteeism (Stress_Report_2007/12/19). In fact, businesses that implement employee wellness programs geared towards maintaining the health and wellness of their employees reported:
• 91% improvement in employee turnover rates
• 57% decrease in injuries
• 71% retention of employees

AND THIS WAS 2007 what about today? HUMMM??? things that make you go HUMMM

Why Do Trainers us this as a selling point? Workout in your Pajamas….?

So there are lots of things we can now do in the comfort of our own homes, why not just workout in your pajamas?
I know many In Home Personal Trainers use this new idea as a selling point but I pajamas should be reserved for official pajama time. It’s not just an outfit: it’s a state of mind.
Sure, it might save time, but you are already saving time by cutting out your gym commute and having your TBT Trainer come to you! Workout wear is not the place to cut corners.
Another justification is the lack of motivation in the morning. Do you think staying in your pajamas is going to boost your energy for the day? Probably not!! Setting the tone in the morning has a huge impact on how the rest of your day unfolds. If you’re going to workout, go big (even at home). Why do something halfway when it’s just as easy to do it properly, including being dressed in exercise clothes.
As a Personal Trainer and an active individual, I have to advise against working out in your pajamas…no one wants sweaty pajamas, and not only that, your partner might be slightly less inclined to cuddle when you wear them again that night!
I hope I have convinced you that pajamas are not appropriate exercise attire – but cheers to you if you’re starting your mornings with a workout!
